TMJ & TMD Treatment in Edmonton – Neuromuscular Dentistry
If you have suffered from chronic jaw pain and consulted numerous physicians who were unable to diagnose and treat your condition, it is possible that you are suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (referred to as TMD and TMJ) and need the help of an experienced, neuromuscular dentist.
Neuromuscular dentistry addresses the nerves, muscles, and alignment of the jaw. If your jaw is found to be misaligned, we realign your bite by placing your jaw into its optimal position. By having your jaw position optimized, common Temporomandibular Joint Disorder symptoms will be relieved and your quality of life improved, as you will not experience pain from routine jaw movements.
General Dentistry vs Neuromuscular Dentistry
The goal behind general dentistry is to evaluate a patient’s oral health, diagnose any conditions involving teeth and gums, provide a thorough cleaning, and recommend preventative strategies.
An understanding of principles which focus on the the alignment of your jaw, tissue and muscle. When the jaw is misaligned, hard and soft tissues are negatively affected resulting in chronic conditions that can decrease your quality of life, such as:
Clicking and popping of the jaw
Neuromuscular dentists can diagnose TMD and correct the bite by realigning the jaw, thus relieving the above physiological problems.
Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
In addition to prescribed dental appliances such as a guard or splint to stabilize the bite and reduce the damage caused by jaw clenching and grinding, our Edmonton office is equipped with a state of the art TENS unit.
TENS stands for “transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.” A TENS machine is a small device that is used to relieve muscle spasm and pain. It achieves this by gently massaging muscles in order to relax them. A constant, rhythmic pulsing of ultra low frequencies increases blood flow and pumps out waste products. It also stimulates endorphin production, which reduces pain.
Myotronics-Noromed, Inc. was founded in 1966 as a result of the research and innovations in neuromuscular dentistry happening at that time. Since then, Myotronics has led the field by providing neuromuscular dentists with the specialized technology necessary to properly evaluate and treat neuromuscular TMJ problems.
We work in conjunction with other neuromuscular dentists in Edmonton who have K7 training and experience. K7 provides computerized jaw tracking technology to verify that the bite and TMJ are in their optimal position.
