Dental Implants in Edmonton
Dental Implants are the only permanent, natural looking, tooth restoration solution for patients who have suffered tooth loss, decay, or a severely fractured tooth. Through the attachment of an artificial tooth to a surgically implanted post, dental implants are allowing people to have full tooth functionality without embarrassment of an unnatural looking restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
If you have suffered tooth loss, it is essential to address the gap immediately or you risk compromising your oral health. Dental Implants are the best tooth restoration solution for numerous reasons, including:
They look and feel completely natural
Your self-confidence will be boosted through an enhanced smile
Your bite retains its proper alignment
Surrounding teeth are kept in place
They are permanent and durable, with the ability to withstand excessive stresses
What the Dental Implant Procedure Entails
The only drawback to Dental Implants is the duration and invasive nature of the procedure. However, no other cosmetic dentistry procedure provides the longevity, durability and natural aesthetic as a dental implant does, making the procedure invaluable for those suffering from tooth loss.
If it is determined that a Dental Implant is the appropriate cosmetic solution for your smile, we will first refer you to a highly skilled specialist to insert the fixture. The first step in the dental implant process is preparing the jaw to receive the implant, which is done by inserting a titanium screw into your gum.
For duration of three to six months, your jawbone and screw will heal together, a process referred to as osseointegration. This step is vital in ensuring success as it provides the foundation for your future implant.
After osseointegration has completed, the gum is gently peeled back and a healing collar, or abutment, attached to the fixture. For the next three weeks, your gum will heal around the healing collar.
At this point the jawbone and fixture are ready for the placement of a porcelain dental crown. You return to our Edmonton, Alberta office and we will take impressions of your mouth and teeth. Using these impressions, we will create an artificial tooth that will enhance your existing smile and surrounding teeth. While the crown is being fabricated, a temporary prosthetic is attached to protect the implant. Upon completion, the temporary crown is removed and your porcelain dental crown is attached.
Maintaining Your Dental Implant
Your Dental Implant should last a lifetime, so long as appropriate, regular maintenance is provided, such as:
