Managing dental anxiety – Focus on Smiles Edmonton

General Dentist and Cosmetic Dental Services in Edmonton, Alberta

For most patients, going to the dentist isn’t their favourite thing on their to-do list. For some patients however, the thought of going to the dentist can evoke feelings of anxiety, fear or dread. Many of these patients have had prior negative experience with a dentist; others may fear pain or simply dislike people touching their mouths. At Focus on Smiles, we try to be compassionate and hear patients out who experience dental anxiety in order to make their visit more comfortable.

We would first of all suggest that patients do not skip dental visits due to their anxiety. This will only further problems, such as decay or gum disease, which will require more invasive treatment the longer they are left to progress. For the anxious patient, it’s best to maintain regular dental visits for check -ups and cleanings to prevent issues from occurring or worsening.

We would also suggest speaking to your dental team about any anxiety or fear that you have prior to your appointment. This way, we will have time to speak with you about what is troubling with you and brainstorm possible solutions to help keep you calm. Once a patient is in the middle of their treatment and begins to feel anxious, it is more difficult to treat the anxiety. Oral medications may be useful for some patients, but these medications need to be administered twenty minutes to half an hour before the treatment begins.

For some patients, their fear of dental procedures are simply the fear of the unknown. Researching the treatment you are scheduled to receive can help you to prepare for the treatment and alleviate some of your anxiety.

For patients who have an intense phobia of the dentist, sedation dentistry may be the best course of action. With sedation dentistry, the patients recieves medication that makes them sleep through the treatment. Sedation dentistry can be especially useful if extensive work needs to be done.
